Ethics Review

Independent IRB review, wherever your research takes you.

Who we serve

Built for researchers without an institutional IRB of their own.

Journals, funders and degree programs increasingly require documented ethics approval for any research involving human participants. Our IRB serves researchers who need recognized, independent review — across North America, Asia and beyond.

Independent scholars

Researchers without institutional affiliation

Practitioners, consultants and independent academics whose studies involve human participants.

Students & early career

Graduate researchers and early-career academics

Thesis and dissertation studies that need recognized ethics documentation for publication.

Cross-border studies

International and multi-site research teams

Studies conducted where local ethics review infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

Review tracks

Three levels of review, matched to your study's risk.

Track A

Exempt determination

For minimal-risk research in established exempt categories — e.g. anonymous surveys or analysis of existing, de-identified data. The IRB confirms in writing that your study qualifies.

Track B

Expedited review

For minimal-risk research outside exempt categories. Reviewed by designated experienced IRB members without convening the full board.

Track C

Full-board review

For studies involving more than minimal risk or vulnerable populations. Reviewed and voted on at a convened meeting of the board.

The process

From protocol to determination, in four clear steps.

Submit your protocol

Email your study protocol, research instruments, consent materials and investigator CV to admin@colossra.org.

Screening & track assignment

We confirm your submission is complete and determine the appropriate review track: exempt, expedited or full board.

Independent board review

Qualified reviewers assess risks, consent procedures and participant protections under 45 CFR Part 46. You may be asked to revise and resubmit.

Receive your determination

A formal determination letter bearing our federal registration numbers, suitable for journals, funders and institutional requirements.

Before you submit

What to prepare.

A complete submission speeds up review considerably. Please prepare:

  • Study protocol (objectives, methods, participants, procedures)
  • Research instruments (questionnaires, interview guides)
  • Informed consent forms and recruitment materials
  • Principal investigator's CV
  • Data protection and confidentiality measures

Submit everything together with the IRB Application Form. Fees depend on the review track and study complexity — the current fee structure is described in the review guide above.
